Hello. Hope you had a good time with your German Christmas. I'm sure you did.
As you know, Ryan and I went to Laurena and Tyler's for Christmas Eve. Laurena made us a scrumptious dinner. Dad sang at church up in Rosthern and then joined us.
We didn't stay too late because Laurena and Tyler had to be up early to have breakfast and open gifts at his parent's house. (What kind of a crazy custom is that?!) Ryan also left quite early with Denise to go to her parent's home near North Battleford. They drove separately because she was staying up there. About 20 minutes later Ryan called home with news that his car is making strange clanking noises, and can he come back and take my van? So away he went leaving me transportation-less. Fortunately, my plans for the day involved loafing around and going to join the Vogelsangs for their Christmas dinner, which Laurena picked me up for.
In addition to parents Mona and Grant, there was Mona's sister and her husband (Tyler's aunt and uncle), and the dad of the two women (Tyler's grandfather). Tyler's the youngest of 3 boys and his brother Kirk was there along with Kirk's wife Tara and their 2 little ones. So it was quite a nice little group
Unfortunately, Grant was not feeling well and missed dinner. At some point someone checked on him and found him to be unresponsive and incoherent, white as a sheet and they couldn't measure blood pressure. Call 911 NOW! By the time the ambulance arrived he had vomitted and was starting to recover. The EMT's couldn't find any immediate problem but wanted to take him to the hospital for some more tests. Grant refused, insisting he was just fine and didn't know what the fuss was about. Fast forward about an hour: Grant is unresponsive and incoherent, white as a sheet and vomitting. Call 911 NOW!
This time the fire truck arrived first before the ambulance. At one point there were 6 - 7 emergency workers in the house, and this time a trip to the hospital was inevitable. Mona, Kirk and Tyler all went along to the hospital. Laurena took me home and stayed to watch a movie while we waited for news. In the end it seems a bad flu virus was responsible for all the trouble. After getting back home, Mona got sick as well. This is not really good news for a couple of people with weak hearts, but as far as I know, all is well.
Do you remember my friend Casey? She plays trombone in the Brass Band and has three little girls that I had in for samples a few times. Her whole family was together and were booked to come in on Boxing Day. Ryan was still gone so I was still vehicle-less and then it occurred to me that, as a result, I was also key-less, so not only could I not get to the studio, but I couldn't get in if I did get there. I almost had to call 911 get get my heart restarted. After a while I remembered that I did in fact have a spare key, and after calling Casey was able to arrange a ride with her. Whew!
The next day I had quite a few family appointments, but finally made it up to Rosthern to meet up with the rest of the Markwart clan just in time for the Chinese gift exchange. (Deja vu from last year?) Last year it was popcorn makers and sno-cone makers. This year there was a plethera of slow cookers, but the reallly popular item was a $50 bill. It was really fun to see the boys and their families again.
Ryan and I have been working on some jigsaw puzzles, so I think I'll tackle that again.
Checked with my friend in Paris and unfortunately he is away from today to Sunday so you will have to find another place to stay! Sorry, it was worth a try though...
Thanks for my gothic/spiderman/80's rock chick/fingerless glove things. Everyone tells me I look fabulous in them.
Do you remember talking to me on Xmas eve? You sounded pretty much full wine and schnapps. Hope you had a fun Xmas. Other than the 911 calls as mentioned by mom, my xmas was great. I got 3 woks, 2 rolling pins, and only one pair of gothic/spiderman/80's rock chick/fingerless glove things.
Am hoping to go out sledding at Glenn's this weekend if it is not too cold (like if it "heats up" to minus 20 or so I think I could hack it). However they are forcasting a maybe blizzard for New Years Eve so will see...
So have a great new years wherever you end up, and keep safe and healthy.
Miss you, your having-an-80's-flashback-sis, Laurena
